After being heavily involved in the Black Panther movement, Malcolm became a union organizer for numerous local union chapters. In 1996 Malcolm fell over while giving a speech which led to the discovery that he had diabetes and a liver infection. Malcolm began losing his sight and shortly thereafter he stepped down from his position with Local 265: "...after I stepped down, that's where I'm at right now." Malcolm considers himself a street activist for "all people" and when this photograph was taken he was living outside.
