On the 4th of July 2003, at the height of a voter registration campaign launched by the local
Gray Panthers Chapter, the local
Raging Grannies sang with vigorous passion at the Berkeley Marina. Loud humorous lyrics, wild hats, a kazoo, and bright faces not only drew attention to the Raging Grannies, but also the Gray Panther voter registration booth—located away from the main bustle on account of random booth assignments.
The
Raging Grannies write their own lyrics (or borrow those from Raging Granny groups located in other parts of the nation/world) and sing them to familiar tunes, educating people about social justice issues. The East Bay Raging Grannies began with the support of members of the
Gray Panthers, a nation-wide activist organization of all ages started by retirees in 1970. Not all of the members of the East Bay Raging Grannies are Gray Panther members, but the two groups share a passion for peace and justice, and at the time this photograph was taken the the East Bay Raging Grannies occasionally met in the local Gray Panther office.
