Barking Horse Farm is located in quiet San Rafael Abaho, a tiny town in Costa Rica's Puriscal province. For six weeks in 2010, Elizabeth Lane lived, worked and shared meals with Quaker ex-pats Elizabeth and Steven Hawkins and their children, Sam (age 12) and Olivia (age 15). On the website, Barking Horse Farm is described as "a family operation in every sense of the word. Each family member...holds a place of importance in the day to day running of the farm". The income generated from Elizabeth's horse tour business and Steven's Peace and Conflict Studies professor salary, in addition to many traveling volunteers insure that this farm "runs".
